What you will get from taking this online course:

  • Lessons in the technical aspects of watercolour painting, such as desaturating, layering, and blending for transparent or opaque finishes
  • Knowledge of the use of colour in watercolour painting
  • A chance to experiment with different watercolour techniques in a supportive setting
  • Elephant Academy Technique Takeaway: learn how to create themed watercolour paintings in still life, landscape and botanics

In this six-week course, artist Andrew Carter will outline the techniques of watercolour. Working closely with each student, Andrew will provide step-by-step tutorials and practical demonstrations in watercolour, giving you the confidence to create your own artworks.  In each class you will study still-life examples and reference images, learning how to transfer what you see into a skilled watercolour painting. You will be taught how to use various watercolour tools, such as paints, brushes and papers. Each week will focus on a different subject, from an introduction to the principles of colour, transparency and abstraction in week one through to finding a sense of place and exploring botanical watercolour painting in weeks five and six. By the end of the course, you will confidently be able to create your own watercolour paintings.

Andrew graduated with distinction from the MA Printmaking degree at Camberwell College of Art, having previously studied Fine Art Painting BA at Central St Martins. He has completed residencies at the Braunschweig School of Art, Germany and the Triangle Arts International Artists Workshop in Namibia, Africa and has exhibited widely, most recently at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Do I need to have any experience to take part in an Elephant Academy class? Absolutely not! We warmly welcome everyone and have classes and activities for all levels, including those who have never picked up a paintbrush or pencil before. All classes are friendly, supportive and fun!

How do I join the online class once I have purchased? You will be sent a Zoom link via email the week before your class. The email will have full instructions on how to join and tips on how to set up your workspace.

I don’t live in the UK – can I still join one of the classes? Absolutely! We welcome students from all over the world and many of our classes are held at times to suit students in Europe and North America.

Is there a recording I can watch after the class? Yes, we can supply recordings to allow you to develop your skills and revisit the classes.
