What will you get from taking this course:

  • A personal insight into the making of picture books. From idea to conception
  • An understanding of how different materials can be used together to create finished artworks
  • Producing dynamic compositions for illustrative narratives
  • Elephant Academy takeaway technique: Confidence in creating strong character designs

Ian Morris will introduce you to the rewarding process of creating picture books. Over the course of six weeks, Ian will present insightful sketchbook and rough draft work through to final illustrative pieces, guide you in an exploration of techniques using the variety of materials provided and help develop your illustrative voice. This course is suitable for students of all abilities and highly recommended if you have a passion for picture books.

Each session will have a different focus on picture books and will discuss appropriate examples of illustrators he admires suited to that theme before moving on to a range of tasks. By the 5th week using the knowledge you have acquired, you will create our own characters and develop a short illustrative sequence.

Ian is a children's book illustrator with Every Word Tells A Story (Quarto), The Library Book (Thames & Hudson), and Alfie's First Fight (Stories of Care) to his name. Ian has been longlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize 2022, a prestigious award to celebrate new illustration talent to picture books. He was also acknowledged for his illustrative abilities upon graduating from University in 2017 by the Association of Illustrators for Varoom's Top Ten Upcoming Image Makers.
